What's the Importance of military exercises ?

Many a times you might have heard or read in the newspaper that India is doing military exercise with some other nation.

It sounds good, that the relationships with another nation of India are improving

But the importance of military exercise is not only this it goes beyond it.

For example it has become a military diplomacy

• Military diplomacy has, in recent years, emerged as a major tool to further diplomatic interests of nations.

That means nations now see military exercise as a tool for their diplomatic interests

How?

• Participation in international level military exercise is an indication of the highest level of trust and confidence between the member nations.

• Military Exercises show this thing very clearly that the member nations have trust and confidence in each other

The Bigger the exercise the more clearly this trust is seen

Now if we see on the operational side

• On the operational side, military exercises enable militaries to understand each other’s drills and procedures, overcome language barriers, and facilitate familiarization with equipment capabilities.

They get to know each other’s equipment, their formations, and their work procedure, of course anything which can hamper the security of the nation is not shared but it helps in the operations when the forces of the nation work together against any natural calamity or against any anti-nation threat, they get to know each other’s procedures which is helpful at that point of time otherwise in the actual missions there are very hindrances and technical obstacles.

So, they overcome language barrier and understand the work procedure of each other.

For Example, in the video of exercises of IAF, we discussed an exercises SIAM BHARAT b/w Indian Air Force and Royal Thailand Air Force, in which they tend to bring SOPs to fight against any natural calamity or disaster.

• Another important advantage of joint military exercise is ‘strategic signalling’.

A very good example of this is MALABAR WAR GAMES, where JAPAN, INDIA, and US all three perform a naval exercise in the Indian Ocean Region, to show the People’s Rebulic of China that it cannot create its dominance in the Indian ocean region easily .

So, that is another important part of Military Exercise that it is used for Strategic Signalling to tell another nation about what we think of this area and what our intentions are without saying it verbally.
